Work Packages

In order to come up with a UI development methodology that addresses μ7 capabilities, one needs to respectively address the three dimension of a methodology: (1) the underlying models and the language in which they are described are addressed in work package 1 dedicated to (meta-)modelling; (2) a step-wise method based on these models is covered in work package 2 dedicated to method engineering; and (3) software tools that support the step-wise method are developed in work pachake 3 Software tools. Once this UI development methodology is defined, it will be applied on industrial applications (work package 4) and public applications (work package 5). The UI development methodology and its components are submitted to the standardisation actions listed in work package 6. Work package 7 dedicated to management coordinates research, development, standardisation activities with the project.

Work Package 1 : Meta-modelling

The objective of this first Work Package is to define generic modelling concepts (meta-models) and associated human-friendly syntaxes required to cover the capabilities of μ7 UIs in order to enable their deployment in a cost-effective manner.

Work Package 2: Method engineering 

The second objective is to define a step-wise method based on models defined in WP 1. Since various organisations, such as software development companies and corporate environments, all have their own method, it is important to preserve this history by providing a methodological framework that can accommodate the various situations and development paths. For instance, a software vendor may want to prototype a Concrete UI first, then, when validated, transform it to code. Later on, the documentation with the task and domain models is produced. Another company may prefer to start from a task and a domain models and apply forward engineering step by step.

Work Package 3: Software tools

The aim is to provide the core technologies that will support the implementation and execution of μ7-compatible UIs of interactive applications. Based on the models defined in work package 1 and the method engineering in work package 2, a design/development/runtime environment will be developed in order to come up with an open development platform that demonstrates the feasibility of the whole approach.

Work Package 4: Industrial and public applications

This work package aims at developing professional applications (to be used by expert users) coming from the industrial partners using the UI development methodology defined so far (with models, method, and software tools) so as to validate the entire UI development methodology. Secondly, it aims at integrating the services developed in work package 3 into the development environments of the industrial partners. Finally, It is also aimed to develop the results of method enactment on the target industrial applications.

Work Package 5: Standardization

Standardisation is the first main objective of the UsiXML project. Therefore, an entire work package will be devoted to reflect this importance. The UsiXML global strategy is composed of five standardisation actions that support the introduction of a standard, augmented by two support actions that will reinforce the effects of standardisation through exploitation and dissemination.

Work Package 6: Exploitation & Dissemination

This work package is aimed at gathering all results from previous WPs, organising them in a consistent way and deliver it to various audiences (dissemination). It is also aimed at coordinating all activities to exploit the technological material obtained in the project in order to reach market penetration.

Work Package 7: Management

The first main objective of work package 7 is administrative and scientific management of the project. The second concerns the exploitation of the results of the project, shall it be through commercial exploitation, scientific dissemination or contribution to standards.
